Strategic Utilization of Microsoft’s Free Resources
We teach students to strategically harness Microsoft’s free developer resources to revolutionize vocational training. This approach directly supports our core values of cost-effectiveness and resource efficiency. By integrating Microsoft tools into the curriculum, we provide an experiential learning platform where students engage with industry-standard technology, gaining hands-on skills that are immediately applicable in their future careers. This method significantly reduces the financial barriers for students, democratizing access to high-quality tech education.
Furthermore, our use of Microsoft’s resources reflects a commitment to innovation and practical skill development. It allows us to offer a curriculum that is not just theoretically sound but also rich in real-world applicability. This focus on practical training ensures that students are well-equipped to meet the challenges of the modern workplace, fostering an environment where education is a tool for both personal and professional growth. By leveraging these free resources, CIT sets an example of how educational institutions can provide immense value while maintaining fiscal responsibility and promoting sustainable educational practices.
Many resources are available at no charge. Those that will be specifically leveraged by this vocational training course are:
- Microsoft 365 licenses – which include among other things access to the Microsoft Office Suite. Word, Excel and PowerPoint are among the most common productivity tools used globally in business both large and small.
- Microsoft Power Platform
- Power Apps
- Power Automate
- SharePoint
- Microsoft Teams
Essential Technology
Some students may have easy access to a PC, while others may not. We are committed to the principle that each student, regardless of background or available resources is provided the equipment and technology to successfully graduate our courses.
A student who has no computer will be provided the following as part of the course:
- Raspberry Pi 5 (8GB) with 256GB of local storage. This includes required accessories such as power supply and cables.
- HD Computer Monitor
- Wireless Keyboard and Mouse
- Webcam
- Headset with microphone
The Raspberry Pi Foundation shares CIT’s vision, prompting our choice of their versatile single-board computers as a program cornerstone. These low cost yet powerful devices run on Debian, a widely-used, open-source Linux variant. By incorporating open source software, we reinforce our commitment to resource efficiency and demonstrate practical empowerment for our students.
Students will need to have direct access to the internet. This could be a hardwired broadband connection, cellular or satellite connection. For students who do not have the financial means to make this a reality, CIT will work to secure funding through local non-profits or with government assistance.
Through the free developer resources, students gain access to cloud storage and computing, mitigating the need for expensive hardware. This is crucial in ensuring that our program remains within reach for all segments of Grenada’s youth, regardless of their economic status.
Upon graduation each student will be gifted the hardware provided so they may continue to use it in their professional life or as a way to further their education continuing to learn new skills.
Collaboration and Communication with Microsoft Teams
Microsoft Teams at CIT is a pivotal tool in fostering collaborative learning and teamwork, crucial in today’s digital era. It exemplifies sustainable resource use and educational equity, providing a platform for all students to engage equally, regardless of their background. Teams enable cost-effective, innovative learning experiences, preparing students for future digital environments while supporting our commitment to environmental stewardship and ethical resource utilization.
This platform serves as a dynamic environment for students to collaborate on group projects. They utilize features like video meetings, file sharing, and integrated apps for real-time brainstorming and project management. This experience equips students with vital teamwork and digital communication skills, mirroring the collaborative nature of modern business settings and enhancing their vocational training.
Moreover, Teams allows students to simulate real business scenarios, such as managing virtual companies, conducting meetings, and interacting with ‘clients’. This practical approach not only enhances technical skills but also provides a comprehensive understanding of business dynamics. The skills acquired through this interactive learning process ensure that CIT graduates are well-prepared for their professional careers, embodying the principles of collaborative learning and effective communication.
